Bathsheba is a 45' canal boat. 10'6" wide in the style of an English narrow-boat. She is currently moored at Pont Royal on the Canal de Bourgogne, which is between Locks 13 and 14 on the Seine side of the summit. We have cruised happily in Burgundy for four years on the Nivernais, Centre and Lateral a la Loire canals. We have now bought a house near Pont Royal and at 70 we are are opting for a more sedentary lifestyle and the boat will not be sufficiently used.
The boat had its topsides repainted in 2008 and 2009. Whilst out of the water the anodes were replaced and the bottom was reblacked.
The boat has a double bed-room forward, then a bath-room with a large rectangular shower space, a Sanimarin vacuum toilet with a holding tank which can be emptied to shore or through the hull and a wash basin.

The saloon is light and airy with several electrical points, cupboards and a side-hatch. It is open plan to the galley at the stern. The cockpit is large enough to have alfresco meals in it.

The plan is one of the builder's. There have been many internal changes since, some of which have been more or less successfully blanked out. The measurements may not be absolutely correct but are a very good indication of the boat's layout.

The hull was made by Devizes Boat Co in 2002 and finished by a boatbuilder as his own boat. The roof was repainted by us in 2008. The topsides were repainted professionally during the winter 2008/09. Whilst the boat was out of the water, the yard renewed the anodes and reblacked the bottom.

There is a bow locker for warps, the water hosepipe and water and diesel jerrycans. In the small deck area there is the fitting for the anchor and under the sole is a 120 gallon watertank.there are french doors into the bedroom with the tunnel-light and the horn mounted beside them.

The bedroom is forward. In the centre of the aft wall is an iron 4'6" bed with the head aft. Above your head is a long cupboard for clothes. with a reading light under. Under the bed is the holding tank and a lot of loose storage space. On the port side are two cupboards for clothes. Forward there is a wardrobe with a shelf over on each side of the entrance. Under the sole of the port wardrobe is the water-pump. In the top of the starboard wardrobe is the small header tank for the radiators. There is a Bisque radiator on the starboard wall of the bedroom and a bedside table on the starboard side. The pump-out switch is just beside it.

The bathroom is on the starboard side between the bedroom and the saloon. There is a Sanimarin toilet, which is a macerating toilet which empties into a holding tank; the tank has a Tankwatch warning light when nearly full (about one day). The tank can be emptied at a shore station (very rare in Burgundy!) or through the hull in a quiet stretch! Next to the toilet is a large rectangular shower cubicle, with light and thermostatic mixer unit. Under the window is a basin with cupboard under and under that the shower drain pump. Finally there is a towel rail on the central heating circuit on the aft wall.

The saloon is open plan with the galley aft. There is a side hatch on the port side. Forward there is a set of cupboards with a granite top over and switches and TV aerial on the starboard side. There are double 230v power points and single 12 volt light points on both sides. On the starboard side there is a Bisque radiator. The furniture consists of two futons which double as easy chairs, a glass coffee table, a folding dining table and four folding black leather dining chairs.

The galley lies astern of the saloon. There is a double stainless steel sink on the starboard side. At either end of the sink worksurface there is a corner cupboard with a drawer under. Along the back wall there is a gas Stoves cooker with four hobs, a grill and an oven. Next there is a 12 volt fridge with a freezer cabinet over a 230v Indesit washing machine. There are steps to the cockpit. At the back on the port side there are cupboards. Astern is for electrics - a 3 kW inverter with a slave control unit on the outside and some storage space under. Forward is a double china cupboard with a drawer accessed from above for small electrical and mechanical items.

There is a large cockpit, in which to have alfresco meals; there is another folding table and two wooden folding chairs stored along the port side of the saloon. Forward there is a box in which are the two gas bottles with switch-over control and storage for brushes and mooring pins and hammer. To the left of the gas box is the gear control and above it the engine control. Beneath on the deck is the landline connection. The connector for the TV satellite dish is right at the aft end of the roof on the starboard side. The deck has a rubber non-slip surface. There are two large hatches to the engine room. The rudder has a removable stainless-steel tiller with wooden handle.

This needs to be described in sections. There is plenty of storage space both to port and starboard, as well as the various elements described below. Working clockwise from the weed hatch at the stern there is the initial diesel tap on the inboard side of the tank (60 gallons), which lies the whole way across the stern; we never turn it off, except when lifting the boat. Next is the engine battery ( 90amp/hours). Then two large house batteries (2x225amp/hrs gel). Forward of these is the Mastervolt battery charger, chargemaster1 12/50-3. These last two were installed in winter 2008/9. Then there are the main electrical control switches, which are also normally left on. The hull cooling water tank is along the port side. The 42hp Shire Barrus Yanmar engine is amidships. It was installed in 2002 but has done very few hours; under 1000: I forgot to bring back the figure. Forward on the starboard side is the Webasto water and central heating boiler, installed in 2004. Astern of that is the calorifier, which is heated by the engine as well as the Webasto. The whole of the accessible surfaces of the engine room have sound-proofing panelling
Viewing
The boat is lying alongside the quay at Pont Royal. This is a little village with a Bed & Breakfast; the Maison du Canal is run by Virginie Garrot ( Tel: 03 80 84 28 27 or 06 62 14 43 76; internet myswelle@live.fr) who controls the water and electricity to the quay. Virginie ahas a key to the boat to shew you inside. There is also a restaurant and a taxi service. It is a turning point for several hotel boats. We shall be in the area from September to November. We can collect you from Montbard, which is about half an hour away and is on the TGV railway. You can take Eurostar to Paris, cross Paris and get the train from Gare de Lyon with more choice. Alternatively take the Eurostar to Lille and then the TGV to Montbard. Another way is to fly to Paris Charles de Gaulle airport and catch the TGV to Montbard from the railway station at the airport terminal. We shall be delighted to shew you over and take you for a spin.

The price is reduced to £63,000, to reflect the remote location. Of course it saves you all the hassle and expense of transferring a boat to the Burgundy canals, if you are considering it. We can also advise on other places where the boat can be left or laid up long term.
